Workshop on radiocarbon dating of mortars

Conveners: Marta Caroselli, Irka Hajdas, Danuta Michalska
Date and location: Sunday 11.9.2022, 9:00-12:00, ETH Hoenggerberg.

Selection of carbon inherent to the studied sample material is an essential step in preparation of samples for radiocarbon dating. Contamination by exogenous carbon can be removed using physical and chemical methods.

In this workshop we will concentrate on recent developments in radiocarbon dating of mortars. Subjects for discussion will include sampling, characterization of mortars, separation of carbon suitable for dating and data evaluation with the possibility to discuss results of the recent intercomparison MODIS2.

Visit to the 14C laboratory at ETHZ will allow to discuss the specific methodological solutions.

We invite short contributions (up to 5 slides) intended to initiate the discussion. Such contributions can also be part of regular papers which will be presented during the conference-week (abstract should be submitted to the corresponding session).
Please contact Irka Hajdas if you are interested in giving a short presentation.
