Workshops
On Sunday 11.09 we will offer workshops at ETHZ Campus Hönggerberg (how you get there >>), dedicated to an informal and in-depth discussion of specific hot topics and to foster exchange between users and suppliers of instrumentation. We have explicitly chosen an open format and let the conveners arrange their workshops according to their specific needs.
Abstract submission is not needed for the workshops. If you want to present something or have other workshop specific questions please contact one of the conveners directly. Formal registration for the workshops will be possible in parallel with the conference registration. For the presentation of your results to a wider community or if you intend to publish a conference paper, please submit an abstract to one of the regular conference sessions.
The schedule of the workshops is already available:
W01 Radiocarbon for studying a changing carbon cycle
Conveners: Tim Eglinton, Sue Trumbore
This workshop will build on a meeting in spring 2022 that explored the merits and feasibility of coordinated, sustained radiocarbon measurement initiatives for improved assessment of current, future and managed changes to the Earth’s carbon cycle and greenhouse gas emissions. The findings of this prior meeting will be summarized and form the basis for engaging the radiocarbon community in discussions concerning the scope and implementation of radiocarbon measurement programs to constrain and predict future perturbations to the carbon cycle.
W02 Compound specific radiocarbon: standards and intercomparison
Conveners: Emmanuelle Casanova, Caroline Welte, Timothy Knowles, Tim Eglinton
We invite anyone interested in sharing their experiences on compound specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) or those interested in developing this analytical approach. The first part of this workshop will focus on sharing methods used for purification of specific compounds, and on discussion which compounds should be added to the palette. In the second part, we will exchange experiences and share ideas about intercomparison exercises for CSRA.
W03 Radiocarbon dating of mortars
Conveners: Marta Caroselli, Irka Hajdas, Danuta Michalska
In this workshop we will concentrate on recent developments in radiocarbon dating of mortars. Subjects for discussion will include sampling, characterization of mortars, separation of carbon suitable for dating and data evaluation with the possibility to discuss results of the recent intercomparison MODIS2. Visit to the 14C laboratory at ETHZ will allow to discuss the specific methodological solutions.
W04 New analytic tools in sample pretreatment
Conveners: Elisabetta Boaretto, Francesco Caruso, Irka Hajdas, Karin Wyss
We will discuss the potential to improve sample preparation and separation of carbon for accurate dating by employing various analytical tools such as FTIR, TGA, SEM, Raman, DTMS, Py-GC-MS, and others. This is also fundamental for the investigation of novel materials used for dating. Visiting the 14C laboratory at ETHZ will allow analysis by FTIR and discussion on specific samples.
W05 Radiocarbon in ocean water
Conveners: Maxi Castrillejo, Lukas Wacker, Lorenza Raimondi, Kayley Kündig
We aim to provide a first-hand experience in the radiocarbon laboratory at LIP-ETHZ, and to foster discussion about radiocarbon analysis in DIC of seawater. We invite everyone to learn sample manipulation, CO2 extraction, graphitization and target preparation following the ETH method and to present their own methods as part of informal discussions.
W06 In-situ radiocarbon
Conveners: Anne Sofie Sondergaard, Irene Schimmelpfennig
We invite everyone interested in informal discussions on the extraction, theory and application of in-situ radiocarbon, together with a tour of the in-situ radiocarbon lab facilities at LIP, ETH. Topics include but are not limited to (i) various in-situ radiocarbon extraction techniques and (ii) approaches to modelling time evolution of in-situ 14C concentrations in rock or sediment.
W07 IntCal Terrestrial Radiocarbon Sub-Groups Meeting
Conveners: Charlotte Pearson, Chris Turney, David Richards, Lukas Wacker
We invite everyone interested in informal discussions on the production and submission of radiocarbon data to the next iteration of IntCal to join members of the speleothem and tree-ring (floating and calendar dated) IntCal sub-groups for short demonstrations and discussion regarding data and meta data requirements, quality controls and the preparation and submission of data for the next iteration of IntCal.
W08 IntCal Sub-Groups on marine data & modeling and on comparison with records of the cosmogenic isotope production
Conveners: Edouard Bard, Raimund Muscheler
We invite everyone interested in informal discussions on the production and submission of radiocarbon data to the next iteration of IntCal to join members of the IntCal focus groups on marine data and ocean modeling, and on comparison records which include radionuclide data (14C, 10Be & 36Cl) from various marine and terrestrial archives, geomagnetic field modulation of their cosmogenic production and global carbon cycle models tying the various records together. The workshop will include short demonstrations and discussion regarding data and meta data requirements, quality controls, modelling aspects and the preparation and submission of data for the next iteration of IntCal.
W11 Ionplus user workshop
Conveners: Simon Fahrni, Sascha Maxeiner
Join our user workshop for Ionplus customers and everyone interested. Share your insights, exchange with other MICADAS, AGE and GIS users and learn about news at Ionplus. There will be short user presentations of 5-10 minutes, depending on the number of participants. Presentations will be grouped by topics and will be followed by a plenum discussion.
